Edmonton could allow public drinking in parks as early as next month!

If you’re looking to legally crack a beer this summer in one of Edmonton’s parks, we’ve got some good news for you. A new report from city staff has unveiled the results of a recent survey public drinking in Edmonton, and a majority of the respondents are in favour! Here’s a quick rundown.

Back in February, the city put out a survey on ‘alcohol consumption in picnic areas’ around Edmonton. That ended up getting over 15,000 respondents, and 71% of them said it was a good thing to test out. We don’t want to toot our horns too much, but 4,000 or so of you read our take on the matter as well. So, thank you if you ended up actually participating.

The pilot project could start as early as May 28th, and would run until early October. Right now, the basic idea is that alcohol consumption will be permitted between 11 AM and 9 PM. You’ll likely need to have some food on hand as well, but those details will be ironed out in the coming days and weeks.

Anyway, the next step comes on April 28th, when the full report (and the suggestion that we test it out) will land in front of Edmonton’s city council. As it stands, there are some 47 different spots around the city that could allow public drinking. And, this includes some of the busiest parks in the city- Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Hawrelak, Government House, and Rundle are all on there.

We’re going to be covering the public drinking project in Edmonton closely, we can tell you that for free. But, if you’re really motivated about it getting approved, then maybe check in with our local councillor and tell them you support it.
