Ontario has a stunning waterfront castle & you can explore it

You’ve heard of Casa Loma, but have you ever heard of Dundurn Castle? This national historic site is an iconic attraction and you won’t believe that a place like this exists in Ontario.

As you step through the doors, you’ll be transported back to the mid-19th century. You’ll even be greeted by a costumed interpreter who will give you a tour of the place.

The story behind this castle is as fascinating as it gets.

The Italianate-style villa was built in the 1830s. It’s the former site of a fortified military encampment established by the British during the War of 1812, says the City of Hamilton.

Later, it became the home of Sir Allan Napier MacNab, a big wig in the railway industry and also one of Canada’s first premiers — or the United Canadas, as it was called back in the 1850s.

MacNab and his family lived like royalty in this opulent castle and the servants lived “below the stairs.” You’ll get a glimpse into their world at this castle as you wander your way through all 40 rooms.

The tour takes around one hour to complete. In the warmer months, you can also pay a visit to the historic Kitchen Garden which hosts workshops where you can harvest food for 19th-century recipes.

On your way out, you can stop at the Coach House which is now a shop that sells unique gifts and items all handmade here in Canada.

Like Casa Loma, Dundurn Castle also hosts events throughout the year, like garden tours and Christmas programming.

Located only an hour outside of Toronto, this spot is an amazing day trip destination for adventure with a side of history.
