Duncan, British Columbia is considered one of Canada’s ‘most charming towns,’ and this week, it’s ringing in the holiday season with a dazzling display of fireworks!
Located on the traditional lands of the Cowichan First Nation, Duncan was first known as the townsite of Alderlea, and later “Duncan’s Crossing.” The small town is now home to the world’s largest collection of outdoor totems, according to its website.
Visitors can explore the “City of Totems” on a self-guided tour of over 40 beautifully carved outdoor totems by Indigenous artists from Vancouver Island and beyond. Even as far as New Zealand!
Its historic downtown consists of Victorian-era buildings which is definitely a rarity in BC! Here, visitors can check out over 300 local businesses, galleries, bistros, boutiques, and quaint shops.
This week, the town is coming together for its annual Silver Bells celebration in the City Square, which promises a free magical holiday experience to all.
In addition to a sip and shop opportunity, visitors can check out a child-friendly beer tent in the Green Door courtyard with live entertainment, marshmallows, and hot dogs galore.
The festive atmosphere will also include roasted chestnuts – a beloved holiday tradition as you roam the town’s festivities.
Finally, there will be a grand fireworks finale at 7:45 p.m.
So if you’re itching for a road trip to Duncan, it’s worth it to visit on Thursday, Dec. 5 for Silver Bells. Mark your calendars, and enjoy, Vancouver!
How to get there: Drive three hours and 12 minutes from Vancouver to Duncan via the Trans-Canada Highway.
