This 11.5 km trail in Ontario has a forest boardwalk & natural ‘punchbowl’

It’s not too late to spend the day in nature this fall, and if you’re looking to add one more excursion to your bucket list, look no further than the Dofasco 2000 Trail.

This beautiful 11.5-km multi-use trail is a hidden gem on Hamilton’s East Mountain, and it’s packed with amazing sights to see.

The journey begins at the breathtaking Devil’s Punchbowl Conservation Area, where you’re greeted with panoramic views of Hamilton and the seemingly bottomless Punchbowl.

“The Devil’s Punchbowl is one of the Niagara Escarpment’s most amazing sights, created at the end of the last ice age by huge melt-water rivers that plunged over the Stoney Creek Escarpment, thus carving the Punchbowl and gorge,” says the Hamilton Conservation Authority.

The massive chasm is mesmerizing to look at because there are many different coloured rock layers of the Escarpment on display.

Once you’ve feasted your eyes on the Punchbowl, you’ll continue on the trail venture through the peaceful rural countryside of Stoney Creek.

If you’re a birdwatching enthusiast, keep an eye out for the Sinclair Sugar Bush and Vinemount Meadows Sanctuary, home to a vibrant array of wildlife and migratory birds.

But the real showstopper along the trail is the Vinemount Swamp, a haven for endangered species like the Northern Harrier, Sedge Wren, and Edward’s Hairstreak Butterfly.

Here, you’ll get to stroll along the magical 1.7-km boardwalk that winds through this unique swamp forest.

Next up is the Saltfleet Conservation Area, which provides a home for 50 species of breeding birds.

The 55 hectares of marshy fields and woodlots are a birder’s paradise.

And if you’re a hiker looking to extend your adventure, the Dofasco 2000 Trail conveniently links with the famous Bruce Trail.

From this point, you’ll be taken to the Battlefield House Historic Site, where you’ll bear witness to a majestic 100-ft stone tower.
