The Devil’s Punchbowl at Lake Crescent is one of Washington’s best places to beat the heat

Warm temperatures are here to stay for at least a while longer. And while you can always cool down at a local pool or beach, sometimes it’s a little more fun to get out of town. Why not check out somewhere like the Devil’s Punchbowl?

The Punchbowl isn’t as ominous as it sounds but it is located in Crescent Lake. The lake certainly has its spooky tales like its lady of the lake but it’s also a crown gem of our state. With crystal clear blue waters that are nearly 600 feet deep, it’s pretty hard to beat.

The Devil’s Punchbowl is a 2.4-mile out and back trail along Spruce Railroad Trail or the Lake Crescent Trail, whichever name you prefer. As you walk down the trail you’ll come along the Punchbowl, a small, protected cove of still and deep water. There’s also a footbridge that crosses the lake in front of the Punchbowl, providing a great spot to take in the view.

The trail is open year-round but if you plan on taking a dip, summer is the best time to visit. Keep in mind you do need to pay a fee to enter Olympic National Park. The fees vary depending on how you’re accessing the park and how many people you’re with. You can learn more at the national park’s website. Enjoy!
