Dan Levy wants you to give the gift of a ‘re-education in the history of Canada’ this Xmas

Still don’t know what to get your friends and fam for Christmas? Dan Levy has a suggestion for you. As many of us know by now, the Schitt’s Creek star is a huge fan of the University of Alberta’s Indigenous Canada course, and he’s encouraging his followers to “give the gift of education” this year.

“Over the past year and a bit, over 400,000 people have signed up to take the Indigenous Canada course through the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta,” Levy said in a video on Tuesday.

“If you haven’t, I highly encourage you to do so. Ask your family, ask your friends, learn about the land that we’re on and the communities that were here long before these holidays,” he continued. “It’s a re-education in the history of Canada.”

The course, which has been offered online since 2017, skyrocketed in popularity in 2020 when Levy announced that he’d be taking it and participating in weekly discussions with the instructors.

Several times since then, he’s taken to social media to inspire people to take the class and re-learn Canadian history through the lens of Indigenous experiences.

According to the description, Indigenous Canada explores “key issues facing Indigenous peoples today from a historical and critical perspective highlighting national and local Indigenous-settler relations.”

So if you’ve got presents to cross off your list, maybe it’s time to switch things up and give the gift of learning this Christmas.
