Lush forests and a dark sky preserve: Canada’s first interprovincial park is partly in Alberta

Sharing is caring and Alberta and Saskatchewan have mastered the art of collaboration.

Thanks to places like Lloydminster to Cold Lake which straddle the border, locals on either side are pretty familiar with each other – but there’s something extra special about Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park.

Known for its lush forests and breathtaking scenery, this stunning destination made history – but that’s not the only reason you should visit.

A partnership between Alberta Parks, Saskatchewan Parks and Parks Canada, Cypress Hills was Canada’s first interprovincial park and has a little something for everyone – no matter the time of year!

“As the highest point in Canada between Labrador and the Rocky Mountains, the Cypress Hills tower above the surrounding plains and offers visitors stunning vistas from multiple viewpoints,” writes Saskatchewan Parks.

“The elevation supports a diverse ecosystem of flora and fauna that is rare or unique in Saskatchewan, including the only naturally occurring lodgepole pine forest on the prairies in Canada. One of the largest Dark Preserves in Canada, the Cypress Hills are an ideal spot for marvelling at the beauty of a starlit sky.”

According to their website, the park is divided into two blocks – the Centre Block and West Block.

In the West Block, you’ll find their wilderness area with limited services – which is perfect for those who want to reconnect with nature.

In the Centre Block? Guests will find the majority of the park’s campgrounds some of which have resort accommodations like food vendors, hiking and cross-country ski trails, an outdoor swimming pool, outdoor adventure service providers, and an amphitheatre.

Either way, you’re in for an incredible time!

Check it out and enjoy – there’s so much to do!
