Countdown to Stampede: Midway foods and activities you can’t miss this year

Yahoo! The 2022 Calgary Stampede is nearly here, which means you’ve got some planning to do.

So far in our Countdown to Stampede series we’ve covered what to wear and where you’ll find the best in live music, but now we’re giving you the rundown on the midway.

Take notes, folks. Here are the foods, rides and activities you need to check out while at the grounds this year.

FOODS

From corndogs to lemonade, this year’s Stampede Midway has an insanely unique menu of deep-fried and daring foods that will both delight and concern you. Here are just a few snacks that you have to try this year.

SWEET

EXPERIMENTAL

GAMES

Stampede’s games are everchanging and mighty expensive, but definitely worth checking out if you’ve got some spare change. While there are a few too many to name, we’d recommend hitting up the classics like Wack-A-Mole, Water Gun Fun and the Duck Pond Game.

MIDWAY RIDES

SUPERWHEEL

New to the 2022 Stampede, this 150-foot behemoth is recognized as Canada’s largest travelling ferris wheel. This will be the only place in the country where you’ll be able to ride the giant in 2022 so you won’t want to miss it!

POLAR EXPRESS

Loud music, neon lights and motion sickness? This ride is a right of passage for Stampede goers. Hang on tight, you’re in for a wild ride.

CRAZY MOUSE

The Stampede’s answer to a roller coaster. This rocky ride is known for its sharp turns, vibrant cars and long lines – but don’t let that discourage you from cashing in a few of your coupons.

WAVE SLINGER

A favourite among grounds-goers, this high-flying swing is the ultimate photo op and a must-ride at the 2022 Stampede.

ZIPPER

Never had a near-death experience? The Zipper is the next worst-best thing. While it’s totally safe to ride, this thing sounds like it’s about to break down at any point in time, but don’t worry. You’ll be fine as long as you empty your pockets of any change you might have.

MEGA DROP

Take off your flip-flops and don’t look down. A favourite among adrenaline junkies, the Mega Drop is aptly named. While its concept is simple, you’re in for the ride of your life. Enjoy!

FIREWORKS

Lastly, no matter where you are on the midway, we’d suggest looking up at 11 pm for the Grandstand Fireworks. While the best place to see them up close (in our opinion) is along the Erlton Bridge, these bad boys can be seen from all over the grounds and are the perfect way to end a magical day at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
