This program provides grants to businesses hiring Indigenous women & gender-diverse tradespeople

The construction and manufacturing industry is a hot cake in the jobs market at the moment. Funded by the Government of Canada’s Apprenticeship Service, the Native Women’s Association has developed the National Apprenticeships Program (NAP).

The program essentially connects small and medium-sized businesses with Indigenous women, Two-Spirit, transgender and gender-diverse people seeking apprenticeships in the skilled trades (if you don’t qualify for this program there are similar government funded programs directed at different audiences).

Now, we know what you’re thinking. Why construction and manufacturing? Well, let us tell you. These industries are experiencing a boom, and skilled tradespeople are in high demand. However, it’s no secret that these jobs have a great gender imbalance. The NAP is here to bridge that gap by promoting diversity and inclusion.

The program was created to help address the underrepresentation of Indigenous women and gender-diverse people in the skilled trades. And also to build economic resiliency in underserved communities.

So, how does it work?

One of the key benefits of using NWAC’s NAP is that it works as an exclusive job board for Red Seal construction and manufacturing jobs. You can post and/or apply for apprenticeship positions through this job board. The second perk is that businesses that hire Indigenous women and gender-diverse tradespeople can get a $10,000 government grant. This grant incentive is available per position, up to $20,000 annually, for first-year Red Seal Apprentices.

Not only does this give aspiring Indigenous women and gender-diverse tradespeople a foot in the door, but it also provides businesses with a diverse and talented workforce.

NWAC is all about breaking down barriers and opening doors to various construction and manufacturing jobs. They understand that apprenticeships are essential in developing skills and gaining hands-on experience. That’s why the NAP also offers support to Indigenous women, Two-Spirit, transgender and gender-diverse people apprentices and small and medium sized businesses throughout their journey.
