This small oceanside town in BC is home to the oldest park in the province

If you’re looking to visit a place in BC that’s rich in history and views, Comox Valley is one for the bucket list. Specifically, the oceanside community of Comox – which is named for the Salish word “Koumuckthay,” translating to “Land of Plenty.”

First settled by the Salish, the Port of Comox was founded in the mid-1800s, according to the town’s website, and now boasts a vibrant downtown core, marina, and extensive greenways, parks, and beaches.

It’s also home to the oldest park in the province, which features one of the highest waterfalls in the country. With a 440-metre drop, Della Falls of Strathcona Park is a dream to visit, with three beautiful cascades.

All in all, the rugged wilderness comprises over 250,000 hectares.

According to BC Parks, winters at Strathcona Park are fairly mild apart from higher elevations, which is great news if you’re looking to take advantage of some winter camping opportunities (no camping fees!).

Note that Lady Falls parking lot, trail, and viewing point are currently closed until September 2024. As well, the Lower Myra Falls day-use parking lot and access road will be closed to vehicles from November 13th to November 20th.

So there you have it, BC! Your next wilderness adventure awaits in Comox – and there are plenty of dining options in the valley to recover with!
