Alberta is home to the largest icefield in the Canadian Rockies & it’s a magical must-see

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again. There’s no place quite like Alberta. From the big bustling cities and charming little towns to the many parks and one-of-a-kind sights, there’s so much to explore – especially in the Rockies!

A must-see for those visiting the area? The Columbia Icefield!

The biggest and best in the mountain range, this icy marvel covers approximately 230 square kilometres to a depth of 1,200 feet and is 28 kilometres long.

“The Columbia Icefield is a surviving remnant of the thick ice mass that once mantled most of Western Canada’s mountains,” Parks Canada explains.

“Nearly three-quarters of the park’s highest peaks are located close to the icefield; ideally placed to catch much of the moisture that Pacific winds carry across the British Columbia interior. Most of this precipitation falls as snow; up to 7 metres a year!”

Want to check it out yourself? We’d recommend visiting the Skywalk!

Open between May and October every year, this experience offers so much more than a great view.

In addition to seeing the icefields from the glass skywalk (918 feet above), guests can also climb aboard their all-terrain Ice Explorer which will take you right onto the great Athabasca Glacier.

Admire fossils, see waterfalls, breathe in the cold air and see goats and other wildlife – you’re in for a memorable adventure!
