Canada’s highest body of fresh water is found in an adorable Ontario town

Life is just better on the water. Kawartha Lakes is one of those areas that Ontario residents flock to during the warmer months, and for good reason. The region is home to towns like Coboconk, a beautiful spot that also happens to have Canada’s highest body of fresh water and a perfect place to stop this spring or summer.

This town may be small, but it packs a punch.

According to Coboconk, the town’s Balsam Lake is “in the heart of the Trent-Severn Waterway, officially recognized as Canada’s highest body of fresh water from which one can circumnavigate the world by boat – this means you can reach all four oceans starting here in Coboconk without ever touching land.” Sweet.

The area is located in the heart of cottage country, known as “a hub for cottages” and for visitors to Balsam Lake Provincial Park, a beautiful Ontario Park camping spot.

Balsam Lake Provincial Park opens for the season on May 9, 2025, and has the makings for a perfect day. The park is tucked along the water, with kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards available to rent.

If you prefer to stay on land, be sure to check out one of the hiking trails, including the popular Lookout Trail. This train spans 2.1 km through “eskers and kames formed over 10,000 years ago from the Wisconsin Glacier.” The views are stunning.

Make a whole weekend out of your trip to this gorgeous town. Coboconk has an adorable stay called The Saucy Willow Inn, and it’s right on the water.

The Inn has four cottages and 200 feet of waterfront space with a sand beach area to enjoy.

Canada’s smallest jail is also located in Coboconk. The jail is a designated heritage site and museum named Ye Olde Jailhouse, which is 4.57m by 8.84m (26.68 sq m), making it the smallest of its kind in the whole country.

With clear waters and so much to explore, add this cottage country town to your list of where to visit this spring or summer, Ontario!
