A new wooden boardwalk in Ontario winds through a lush forest and over a stream

Newmarket, Ont., is home to a sweeping new boardwalk that provides visitors with an immersive forest experience from above-ground level. Here’s what to know about the Clifford Perry boardwalk.

The stunning new trail opened earlier this year, and it’s truly worth the hour or so drive from Toronto.

The Clifford Perry Boardwalk is a 1,020-foot-long and 10-foot-wide structure that rises to 16 feet above the forest floor. It was designed by Fiberwalk, which is also behind the David C. Only Boardwalk and Indo-Malaya Boardwalk at the Toronto Zoo.

A trail for everyone

According to the company, the boardwalk was engineered to navigate a steep 50 per cent slope using a gentle five per cent maximum grade. This, in turn, ensures “accessibility while preserving the natural environment by avoiding major trees and crossing a stream.”

And to achieve its distinctive curving shape, 18 different panel types were custom-designed, allowing the boardwalk to turn along the terrain.

The structure functions as a multi-use path and includes high railings supported entirely by custom connections built into the Fiberwalk panels.

These design choices not only enhance safety but also contribute to the boardwalk’s clean, modern aesthetic. Talk about picture perfect!

Visitors can use the boardwalk as a recreational trail and a scenic route. You can enjoy elevated views of the surrounding forest and floodplain, offering a unique way to experience the area’s natural features.

The Clifford Perry Boardwalk, the new feature within the Town of Newmarket, serves as both an infrastructure improvement and a destination for those looking to explore nature without needing to travel so far.

It sounds like a trip over to Newmarket is now in order. We’ll see you there!
