Downtown Toronto just got a massive new park but there’s a twist

They’re not calling it “Park in Progress” for no reason. The City of Toronto and Menkes Developments Ltd. just announced that Sugar Wharf, along Queens Quay East, is now home to a 10,000m2 public space. The spot is a placeholder “for community use while a long-term vision is developed for the permanent park.”

Here’s what we know.

The Park in Progress is estimated to be around for three to five years, with the final design slated to be completed in 2030. Currently, city residents can utilize the features already in place, which include grass, trees, pathways, seating, pickleball courts, and an off-leash section for pets.

“As we prepare for a permanent park at 50 Queens Quay E., it is a priority for me that our community can enjoy the space with a park-in-progress. I’m proud to be delivering green space for our waterfront, and for this collaboration between the City and Menkes,” says Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik, City Councillor, Ward 10 Spadina-Fort York.

The park is just a small slice of what the City of Toronto is cooking up in an effort to “revitalize Toronto’s waterfront with vibrant public spaces.”

It’s estimated that by the time the park is completed, the eastern section of Toronto’s waterfront will house over 100,000 residents, so spaces such as this park are necessary.

So, while this park is not the final product, the temporary version is now open to the public. I must say, it’s nice to see the waterfront area getting more public spaces, so to that, I say “well done.”
