Calgary is turning into a massive city-wide treasure hunt this weekend

Cruising through Calgary’s back alleys and liminal spaces is a great way to snag some unwanted treasures. But with the City of Calgary’s latest edition of Curbside Treasure Hunt, you won’t have to.

The City of Calgary is welcoming back the Curbside Treasure Hunt on Sept. 6 and 7, offering a city-wide treasure hunt to its scavengers and salvagers.

It’s easy to get involved: simply leave your gently used, reusable items you no longer need out by the curb with a “free” sign. Your neighbours might be able to turn your trash into something more useful.

The Treasure Hunt won’t just load you up with unwanted gear, though. It’s also a great way to explore Calgary’s residential neighbourhoods, meet some locals and rehome unwanted items that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

What to expect

The city-wide treasure hunt will take place all weekend long, from Saturday, Sept. 6 to Sunday, Sept. 7.

“By participating in the Curbside Treasure Hunt, residents play a significant role in reducing waste and reusing items,” says Natalia Gonzalez, waste diversion specialist for the City of Calgary, in a press release.

Participating is simple: first, identify items around your home that you’re happy to part with, and mark them with a “free” sign. Setting the items out on your curb on Sept. 6 and 7 will allow prowlers to pick them up.

Calgary residents are encouraged to explore new neighbourhoods and hunt for items they might find interesting or useful.

Following the event, don’t forget to remove your curbside items and use the City’s What Goes Where tool to learn more about where you can recycle, donate or dispose of them.

Thrifting and salvaging used goods is every millennial’s favourite pastime, and this innovative event extends that interest to all communities and demographics in Calgary.

So grab your goods and get hunting. There’s plenty of curbside treasure just waiting to be discovered!
