Canada’s largest high-elevation freshwater lake is in BC

It’s hard to pick a favourite mountain lake in British Columbia, but if we’re going off of the views alone – there are few places more scenic than Chilko Lake at Ts’ilɂos Provincial Park. Revered for its pristine waters and dramatic mountain vistas, the elevated lake is surrounded by stunning alpine meadows, glaciers, waterfalls, and rugged peaks. All that’s missing is your picnic blanket to take it all in!

Diverse wildlife

Situated north of Whistler (250 kilometres from Vancouver), the remote park is home to diverse wildlife that remain largely undisturbed by human activity, making it an ecologically important area in BC.

This includes Canada’s largest, natural high-elevation freshwater lake – Chilko Lake. Here, visitors can take a dip in its distinctive cold, blue-green waters, explore lagoons and surrounding volcanic dyke formations, and take in an incredible mountain backdrop.

As the highest point in the Chilcotin Range, Ts’ilʔos Park has a spiritual tie to the First Nations of the region, celebrated in a Xeni legend.

To the west, the park is boarded by the rugged Coast Mountains. To the east, there’s the dry interior plateau, creating an intriguing contrast in landscapes and nature.

Visitors have plenty of camping, kayaking, and fishing opportunities. However, when it comes to boating, visitors should know that the lake is best explored by experienced boaters who can navigate its unpredictable winds.

In terms of camping, there are two front-country campgrounds to choose from, as well as eight rustic campsites at the back-country Gwa Da Ts’i campground (accessible via Tatla Lake).

Here, facilities include water wells with hand pumps, picnic tables, fire rings, and pit toilets.

Location & info

Note that the roads to Chilko Lake are “rough” with varying weather conditions throughout the year. So be sure to travel carefully, with lights on.

The nearest communities to the park are Nemiah Valley, Hanceville, Tatla Lake and Williams Lake, according to BC Parks.
