This Alberta recreation area spans over 480 acres of woodlands

The best thing about hiking is that it can be done (almost) any time of year, and only requires the shoes on your feet.

Okay — maybe it requires a few other things as well, but you get the point. If you’re looking to get some fresh air and outdoor movement, hiking is an easy way to do so. As a bonus, you get to explore the splendour of Alberta’s nature.

The Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area has no shortage of family-friendly adventures. Just outside of Edmonton near Stony Plain, this area is beloved for its scenic hiking trails, lakeside picnic sites, and playground.

The recreation area spans over 480 acres of woodlands, encompassing several small lakes and ponds throughout the forested land. Visitors can discover 11 kilometres of hiking trails, suitable for a wide range of hiking abilities.

There are four main hike routes: Indian Ridge, Nature’s Way, Woodland Lookout, and Cranberry Corner. They range from 1.93 kilometres to 3.47 kilometres and novice to advanced.

What makes Chickakoo Lake trails so beginner-friendly is that they form a network of connected loops. This means you can customize the length of your hike. The trails are also well-labelled, with maps and numbered signs posted frequently so you always know where you are.

There’s also an abundance of benches and picnic sites along each route. Some even have spectacular viewpoints and interactive panels, including various lookouts to the many surrounding lakes (including the titular Lake Chickakoo, of course). It’s perfect if you need a break, a snack, or just want to take in the beauty of your surroundings.

Grab your friends or family, lace up your sneakers, and take a road trip to the Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area for a day of outdoor fun custom-tailored to your needs and preferences.
