You can pick blueberries for free at this park in Tacoma

Heading to your favorite u-pick berry farm is a classic way to celebrate the bounty of our local farmers and summer in the PNW. But did you know you can actually pick blueberries for free less than an hour from Seattle? Charlotte’s Blueberry Park is a unique local park that is truly ripe for the picking.

So how did this all come to be? Well, from 1952 until 1968, the park was Berg’s Blueberry Farm, in 1997 Metro Parks Tacoma took over the area and preserved the land as a 20-acre park for all to enjoy.

Today, there are over 3,372 bushes, with five different varieties of blueberries. Like other local farms, the best picking season is typically from July through September.

What’s more, Metro Parks Tacoma does not use any pesticides or fertilizers on the plants. Best of all, there is no fee to pick the berries, and picking is done on a first-come-first-serve basis during the season.

Be sure to check it out next time you’re in the south Sound.
