This Ontario Park on the edge of the Canadian Shield has 22 lakes

More Ontario adventures await! If you have yet to explore the bountiful nature and scenic views that Frontenac Provincial Park is known for, this is your sign to do so. This wonderful piece of land is right on the edge of the Canadian Shield, and home to 22 lakes. Here’s what to know.

Head east for about a three hour drive and just north of Kingston and you’ll come across Frontenac Provincial Park. According to Ontario Parks, it is part of the UNESCO-listed Frontenac Arch Biosphere and sprawls across 5,355 hectares of land.

“Frontenac Provincial Park is part of Ontario’s Frontenac Axis, a 2.1 billion-year-old rocky landscape that was once part of an ancient mountain chain bordering the Canadian Shield and the Adirondack Mountains,” shares Destination Ontario.

“Characterised by dense forests and shady pathways, the park is dotted with granite outcrops and deep, crystal-clear lakes that were carved out during the last ice age.”

Ready for your hiking adventure? There are 13 different hiking trails that range from easy to moderate. Each with its own wonderful trail experiences, one of the more popular trails, Arab Lake Gorge Trail, guides you past valley bottom vegetation, various ferns and through a scenic boardwalk.

Whether you choose to explore by foot or boat, you can enjoy over 100 km of hiking trails and its 22 lakes.

The lakes are a perfect swimming destination in the summer months. Though you can enjoy a little swim in all the lakes within the park, some are deeper and colder than others. You’ve been warned!

Before you embark on your adventure to Frontenac Provincial Park, you must get a day permit. You can get these during office hours at the park, or online ahead of time.

Frontenac Provincial Park is open all year long but make sure to check it out this season – you won’t regret it!
