Drumroll please: Here are the Canadian winners at the 2023 Oscars

Hollywood North, represent! The 95th Academy Awards have proven once again that Canada is home to some serious talent, both on-camera and behind the scenes. There were several Canadian Oscar winners this year, and here’s the list.

The first Canadian to accept an award was Toronto documentary filmmaker Daniel Roher. Roher won the award for his film Navalny, which earned the title of best documentary feature film.

Toronto’s very own writer-director extraordinaire, Sarah Polley, took home the award for best adapted screenplay for her work on Women Talking, a movie based on the novel by the Canadian author Miriam Toews.

You may not know that Brendan Fraser also has Canadian roots. The star was raised primarily in the U.S., but spent part of his childhood in Ottawa and has Canadian parents.

Fraser won the award for best actor for The Whale, which premiered back in September at Toronto International Film Festival.

Fraser’s hairstylist and makeup artists, including Montreal-born Adrien Morot, also accepted the award alongside him for helping him transform into the 600-pound character.

There were also plenty of noteworthy Canadian nominees at this year’s Oscars, including the Toronto-based Disney film Turning Red, created by famed Canadian animator Domee Shi.

Turning Red was nominated for best animated feature, but was beat by Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Also nominated for an academy award was the Canadian-U.S. documentary film Fire of Love.

Overall, it was a successful night for Canadian Oscar winners and nominees. We’re thrilled to see northern talent representing at the Academy Awards.
