Canada’s ‘ground breaking’ blue dime is now in circulation across the country

There’s a brand new dime on the scene and there’s a chance it’ll end up in your wallet! The commemorative 10-cent coin entered circulation on October 22nd and it’s got a distinctive feature that’ll definitely catch your eye.

The coin is in tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Bluenose, Canada’s world-famous ship. Designed by Nova Scotia marine artist Yves Bérubé, the coin features a splash of blue to bring the North Atlantic waters to life, where the Bluenose sailed during its glory days.

According to the Royal Canadian Mint, the feature is a “ground-breaking first for a 10-cent circulation coin.”

The Bluenose vessel was famous for being the “sleekest and fastest fishing schooner the world had ever seen,” the Mint says. It won all kinds of awards and races and is still celebrated to this day.

The Bluenose dime is circulating from coast to coast in celebration of this Nova Scotian innovation and its legacy. There are six million coloured versions and nine million uncoloured versions of the coin to go around, so there’s a chance you’ll end up with this rarity in your palm someday.

This comes not long after the Mint released its commemorative loonie in celebration of the 125th anniversary of Yukon’s Klondike Gold Rush.

Three million of the loonies entered circulation, featuring beautiful designs by Vancouver artist Jori van der Linde, depicting the four people who apparently first discovered the gold on Rabbit Creek.

The next time you get handed some change, remember to keep your eyes peeled for the Bluenose!
