Canada’s border has reopened to Americans after 506 days – here’s what to know

It’s August 9th, know what that means? The Canadian border is officially open again to fully vaccinated American travelers! Feels pretty wild right? Well, as you might have guessed there are rules in place to make traveling safe for both Americans and Canadians. Here’s everything that you need to know about the Canadian border opening.

Starting today, Americans can enter Canada at all major airports and some land crossings. In order to enter Canada, Americans must have had both shots of a Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before arrival, live in the US, and show proof of a negative molecular test for COVID-19 within 72 hours of arrival.

If you’re wondering, approved COVID-19 vaccines currently include Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/Covishield, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). Additionally, Americans have to use the ArriveCAN app or online portal to provide their vaccination details.

So what about quarantine? Well if you’re fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 you do not need to quarantine. However, you will need to provide a quarantine plan when you cross the border in case it is needed. Now if you’re bringing unvaccinated children younger than 12 with you, they will need to take a day 1 and day 8 COVID-19 test but they do not need to quarantine.

So if you’re planning a Canada trip soon, you’re definitely going to want to have all the documentation you could think of. We’re talking passport, a negative COVID-19 test, vaccination card, quarantine plan, your reason for traveling to Canada, and exactly where you’ll be going. After all, the more details you are able to provide, the better.

Now keep in mind, it will be up to Canadian Border Services agents to decide whether or not you are allowed entry into Canada. But the good news is that if you meet all the requirements, you can finally enjoy a trip up north! If you’d like to learn more you can click here.
