Hold up: City of Calgary have announced they WILL have a fireworks display on Canada Day

Bummed about not having fireworks on July 1st? Only a week after Calgary announced Canada Day festivities would be reimagined for 2023, the city has backtracked their plans to replace the fireworks with a new pyrotechnic show.

Following feedback from council members and a number of Calgary residents, the explosive display has been added back to city programming in addition to their “stunning lights and sounds” at Fort Calgary.

“We have heard from many Calgarians as well as members of City Council that while the pilot program is valued, they would also appreciate an aerial fireworks display to celebrate on July 1,” said David Duckworth, City Manager.

“We are working with partners to confirm an appropriate site and will share details as they become available.”

As for why they changed it in the first place? According to the city, cultural sensitivities, late-night traffic, noise, overcrowding, wildlife, and environmental concerns were all factors in their initial decision, which they explain will still be prioritized.

“The City remains committed to considering cultural sensitivities while respecting the diverse make-up of Calgary,” they wrote.

“As part of Canada Day 2023, The City will offer diverse, educational and inclusive programming for Calgarians to celebrate culture and community. Plans to feature an enhanced pyrotechnic show at Fort Calgary will move forward, including a display of lights and sounds that will be launched from the main stage at Fort Calgary during the headliner act.

As of right now, the city has yet to release further information about this summer’s event, but we’ll update you as details come to light.

Until then, let us know where you’ll be on Canada Day. It won’t be long until another weekend is upon us
