Calgary’s Reconciliation Bridge will now light the night for this very important reason

Celebrating a culture rich in history and tradition, the city has just announced the launch of a new program that will bring the Calgary Reconciliation Bridge to life in celebration of the indigenous community and the awe-inspiring stories that have been passed from generation to generation.

Imagined and designed by local designers LightSPACE, SMP Engineering and WOW lighting, Calgary’s Reconciliation Bridge will don familiar colours throughout this calendar year as a way to commemorate important and critical indigenous events.

“We all have a part to play in reconciliation and healing,” said Geoff Bouckley of lightSPACE. “We’re proud to lend our expertise to this meaningful initiative to illuminate the bridge in ways that both foster solemn reflection.”

According to a recent press release, this particular project was actually based on input from the City of Calgary’s Indigenous Relations Office and will help pay tribute to significant dates of awareness such as National Aboriginal Awareness Week, Métis Week and the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.

From patterns that evoke elements of the medicine wheel to that of traditional beadwork, these LEDs will reflect the importance of diversity as Alberta and the world learns to really appreciate, understand and honour the Indigenous culture.

“Spanning the Namaahkaa or Bow River, the Reconciliation Bridge stands in a place of great meaning for the Indigenous peoples of southern Alberta,” said Stewart Baker from the Indigenous Relations Office.

“We are pleased to support this lighting program to honour Calgary’s Indigenous culture and history year-round and as a part of the ongoing Indigenous reconciliation and healing that’s so important for our city,” so – keep your eyes peeled YYC.

It’s going to be a colourful year in the inner city – but it’s important to understand and acknowledge why.
