Calgary’s Glenbow is closing for 3 years for MAJOR renovations – here’s what it will look like

The Glenbow Museum is a city staple, but it could use a little spice. This September, with help from Dialog Design, the folks behind incredible buildings like the Public Library and the University District, everyone’s favourite field trip destination will get a brand new look in hopes of appealing to an ever-evolving Calgary.

Of course, because the total transformation of a 46-year-old building certainly won’t happen overnight, the museum has announced that they will actually close for three whole years as of August 29th, giving builders plenty of room to safely turn the space up to a perfect 10.

This will be done as part of a three-stage plan to bring the venue into this century and will require a ton of time, patience and work.

“Calgary is ready for an art museum that draws the richest examples of human creativity to our community while presenting the best of our city to the world. Together, we can build one of the most progressive and impactful civic spaces in North America, linking Albertan communities to the arts for generations to come,” Glenbow President & CEO, Nicholas R. Bell said on their website.

While the first stage was all about smaller interior renos and raising the $120 million for the project, the second will focus on decommissioning the electrical and mechanical systems and creating more storage to house their growing collection.

Finally, the third phase will see the museum’s grand reopening and usher in a new era for the facility.

Can’t wait until 2024 when it finally reopens to get your next fix of Glenbow-brand art & history? Don’t fret!

The museum will actually be opening a pop-up exhibition space in February 2022- though there’s no word yet on where exactly that will be.

Are you excited, Calgary? This is huge for the venue and honestly, we can’t wait to see what it’ll look like. Here’s to you, Glenbow – we’ll miss you and we’ll be counting the days until you reopen!
