Ontario has the ‘largest outdoor pool’ in Canada

Late-summer swim anyone? Byng Island Conservation Area in Ontario is said to have the largest outdoor pool in Canada, and it’s still open for the season.

Located around 90 minutes outside of Toronto, this conservation area has all kinds of summertime activities.

Byng Island provides access to the Grand River and Lake Erie for paddling, fishing, and sailing.

It spans 190 hectares and is composed of Carolinian forests, wetlands, and creeks, says the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA).

One of the highlights of this region is, of course, the outdoor swimming pool.

It is two acres in size, making it “the largest outdoor pool in Canada,” says GRCA.

It can hold up to 1,000 people and it even has a diving board.

Vancouver’s Kitsilano Pool holds the record for Canada’s “longest” outdoor pool at 137 metres.

The pool will close on September 4th, 2023, so you still have time to visit!

Swimmers are invited to stop by between 11 AM to 6:30 PM, except for Tuesdays and Wednesdays when the pool is closed.

For all visitors aged 4 and older, a wristband is required for entry and it costs $2.50.

Given the popularity of this pool, it may reach capacity on hot summer days. You can check real-time capacity updates online before you visit.

In addition to activities on the water, Byng Island has cycling and hiking trails, amazing wildlife, and camping accommodations too.

Not far from the conservation area is the beautiful waterfront town of Port Dover, which has a sandy beach with palm trees and a scenic pier.

It’s the season of outdoor fun here in our province, and we hope this inspires your next adventure!
