Edmonton’s Churchill Square Christmas Tree ceremony will have free hot cocoa and skating

Edmonton City Hall’s Christmas tree will be lighting up the city this weekend!

You can celebrate the season by visiting the opening of Edmonton City Hall’s skating rink and the lighting of Edmonton’s Christmas tree, featuring live music, performances, and family-friendly activities for everyone to enjoy. Bright Light Skate Night will make the most of a beautiful winter evening in Edmonton, and here’s what to know.

What to expect

On Dec. 13, there will be an abundance of free activities to participate in and goodies to be given.

From 4 to 8 p.m., there will be free hot chocolate being given away by Hallway Cafe. Don’t wait, as hot chocolate is only available while quantities last. In the same timeframe, there will be roaming performers in the City Hall Plaza. Freeplay will excite the audience with their exciting theatre antics and interactive performances. There will also be fascinating ice carving demos, with talented artists transforming blocks of ice!

At 5 p.m., you can join Mayor Andrew Knack in counting down to the official lighting of the Christmas tree, as well as all the beautiful lights surrounding it.

After the tree is lit, you can move inside to the City Room at City Hall. Here, the festivities can continue.

Inside City Room, there will be ornament making, where you can make your own unique Lego™ ornament until 7 p.m. to help decorate the community tree. Photos with Santa will also be available up until 8 p.m.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. up until 7:15 p.m., there will be a featured performance by musician Robyn Ashley. This way, you can get in the best, most festive mood possible.

If you’re looking to join in on the festivities, parking is available in the City Hall Parkade, Canada Place Parkade and Stanley A. Milner Library Parkade for $2 per hour (with a $10 maximum from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Have fun lighting up the season, folks!
