This Alberta town is the first International dark sky community in Canada

From thriving cities to dramatic landscapes, Canada really has it all, but if you’re an avid stargazer, few places are as enchanting as Bon Accord, Alberta – Canada’s “first international dark sky community.”

Bon Accord, Alberta

Whether it be a meteor shower or the northern lights, you’re hoping to see in high definition, this charming town is a must-visit, but don’t just take our word for it.

“Despite its location only 40 kilometres north of downtown Edmonton, the quality of Bon Accord’s night skies is comparable to some of IDA’s Dark Sky Parks,” explained The International Dark Sky Association (IDA).

“Residents have demonstrated their commitment to maintaining these conditions while allowing the town to grow responsibly and sustainably.”

How do you get IDA designation?

In order to secure IDA status, Bon Accord had to enact one of the most progressive and comprehensive outdoor lighting policies in Canada.

This included the installation of IDA-approved lighting, the establishment of lighting “zones” throughout the town, and resident participation—so, it certainly wasn’t easy!

Want to visit?

Bon Accord is situated along Highway 28, so dim your lights, bring a lawn chair, point your peepers north, and stay a while.

In addition to the night sky, guests are also encouraged to visit Jurassic Forest and Prairie Gardens, as well as the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village and Elk Island National Park.

They also have beautiful parks and hold a ton of fun events throughout the year so enjoy.

There’s no place quite like it.
