Fall is nearly here and The Calgary International Film Festival has finally begun announcing the 2022 lineup. While they’ve only given us a taste of what’s to come waves are already being made thanks to an Alberta release of the highly anticipated documentary, Black Ice, which was co-produced by Drake, Future and basketball legend LeBron James.
Described as an inciteful film directed by Hubert Davis (who is the first Black Canadian to be nominated for an Oscar) this 94-minute piece examines the history of anti-Black racism in hockey which has been carried throughout the 19th century and into the leagues of today.

“I think it is more important than ever before for all generations, particularly young people of colour, to understand and see the diverse faces who have contributed and shaped one of the essential fabrics of our country,” Davies says in the film description,
In an effort to set the record straight, Black Ice will shed light on the many historical contributions of marginalized Black players in hockey – and will only be shown in participating theatres in Calgary following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
