This year, there are several notable Black History Month events in Seattle that you don’t want to miss. From talks to art shows, live performance and more, here are 5 Black History Month events happening in Seattle this February.

Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations

This electrifying, new smash-hit Broadway musical follows The Temptations’ journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The musical explores themes of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal, “as the group’s personal and political conflicts threatened to tear them apart during a decade of civil unrest in America.”

SAL Presents Reginald Dwayne Betts

Award-winning author, poet, lawyer, and outspoken advocate for criminal justice reform, Reginald Dwayne Betts is speaking at SAL this February. Have your notion of justice interrogated and challenged as Betts performs his celebrated poetry collection Felon.

Black History Month Keynote Program

To celebrate Black History Month, NAAM will hold an in-person conversation with Dr. Damion Thomas, Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture Curator of Sports. Guests will be inspired, informed, and ignited for action.

Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr.: Rosa Parks Series

American printer, book artist, and papermaker Amos Paul Kennedy is best known for his works on social and political commentary, particularly his printed posters. In February, you have the opportunity to see a selection of them displayed at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

Nina Chanel Abney: Fishing Was His Life

You have the opportunity to see works by artist Nina Chanel Abney at the Henry Art Gallery until early March. Abney “makes paintings, prints, and large-scale murals with layered compositions and fragmented narratives that explore themes of politics, race, sexuality, and celebrity.”
