Here’s how you can celebrate Black History Month in Edmonton this February

January has come and gone and February is upon us. On the calendar this month? Valentine’s Day, Family Day and Black History Month. Whether you support a local business, donate your time or money to an organization, or attend an event, here are just a few ways to celebrate Black History Month in Edmonton this year!

SUPPORT LOCAL

From Veer Active, Irie Foods and the Island Grill there are some great Black-owned businesses in Edmonton. This month, if you’re going to grab a bite or indulge in a day of self-care, consider checking out one of the restaurants, cafes, bars or retail stores listed on the Afro Biz directory. 

ATTEND AN EVENT

BLACK HISTORY MONTH OPENING CEREMONY 

A collaborative effort with the National Black Coalition of Canada and Norquest College, the city of Edmonton will host a Black History Month opening ceremony at City Hall this year. This event will feature entertainment, speeches and so much more, so don’t miss it!

WAWT BLACK HISTORY MONTH GALA 

Amplifying voices and celebrating the legacy of Canadian Women of African Descent, WAWT is proud to present this year’s Black Tie Gala event: Cross-Generational Conversations. For more information or to purchase your tickets now, visit the link above.

TASTE OF AFRICA

Hungry? Taste of Africa returns with a rich display of African dance, storytelling, poetry, armchair travels, and incredible food from all over Africa and the Caribbean. Get your tickets now!
