Need to get rid of oversized items? Here’s how to do it for free in Edmonton

If you’ve been ignoring that musty, broken couch in the basement or that stack of bald tires you probably should have thrown away two seasons ago, well, this is your time to shine.

The City of Edmonton is bringing back its Big Bin Events for the summer, which basically means you can show up and dump your oversized stuff for free.

From old couches, chairs, and mattresses, to appliances and scrap metal, anything that is too big for curbside can be taken to an event site or a Free Eco Station Weekend.

Electronics like computers can be dropped off for recycling, and larger appliances like fridges, washers, and dryers are accepted too.

Yard waste like leaves, branches, and grass clippings gets composted, while things like metal and tires are recycled instead of just tossed.

There are a couple of caveats: elm wood isn’t accepted, and things like dirt, rocks, and sod don’t count as yard waste, so you might get charged for those.

Items that will definitely not get accepted include hazardous waste like batteries, chemicals, paint, automotive fluids, or any sort of gas-powered equipment or waste from businesses. Those can go to an Eco Station or the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.

Here’s when and where to go this season:

May 9 to 10: Northlands, Wayne Gretzky Drive and 119th Ave. NW
May 23 to 24: Commonwealth Stadium, 11100 Stadium Rd. NW
May 30 to 31: Ellerslie, 2415 101st St. SW
June 6 to 7: Callingwood, 17740 69th Ave. NW
June 13 to 14: Booster Juice Recreation Centre in Terwillegar, 2051 Leger Rd. NW
Aug. 29 to 30: Commonwealth Stadium, 11100 Stadium Rd. NW
Sept. 12 to 13: Mill Woods Town Centre, 2331 66th St. NW
Sept. 19 to 20: Castle Downs Recreation Centre, 11520 153rd Ave. NW

You can learn more about the events on the City of Edmonton website.

Happy spring cleaning!
