Best places to watch the dazzling Lyrids meteor shower in Calgary

We strongly believe that everyone should watch a meteor shower at least once in their lifetime. We also believe that there’s no time like the present and what a coincidence – there just happens to be one coming up this week! Unfortunately, in the ‘big city,’ seeing anything above is not easy, SO we thought we’d put together a handy list of where to! Here are some of the best places in and around Calgary to watch the upcoming Lyrids Meteor Shower between Saturday, April 15th and April 29th, 2023 (peak on the 21st-22nd).

ANN & SANDY CROSS CONSERVATION AREA 

Don’t want to drive that far out of the city? Just outside the Calgary limits, Calgarians will find the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area. This 4,800-acre day-use natural area protects habitats, provides space for animals AND has a pretty good view of the sky.

KEOMA PUBLIC FIELDS

Live in the North? Lucky you! You’re only minutes away from another fantastic place to see the shower! A 37-minute drive from Calgary’s city centre, Keoma Public Fields will give stargazers a brilliant view of the sky and everything in it.

BRAGG CREEK

Like Keoma, Several areas in and around Bragg Creek will do just fine for those looking to sneak a peek at this month’s meteor shower. The best part? Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, It’s not a terribly long drive either.

HORSESHOE CANYON

This week, pack some road snacks and drive out to Horseshoe Canyon in Drumheller, a beautiful locale for camping, biking, walking, or lounging. Honestly, no matter the time of day it’s gorgeous here, but at night the sky is dark, the stars are bright and the constellations really come to life.

CHAIN LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK

Chain Lakes may be a few kilometres out of the city but you won’t regret it. On a clear night, see practically everything. From stars and planets to meteor showers like the Lyrids, gazers will not be disappointed.
