This BC community is located in one of the largest rainforests in the world

Fancy a trip to one of the largest rainforests in the world? You don’t have far to travel in BC. Situated at the entrance of the famed Great Bear Rainforest, the small community of Bella Coola offers plenty of outdoor thrills for adventurers of all kinds, whether you’re into hiking, climbing, snowshoeing, or heli-skiing. Let’s get into it!

Winter activities

During the colder months, the valley’s snow-covered mountains tower over the community, blanketed by a cold fog.

Winter sports enthusiasts can hit the slopes at the Bella Coola Heli Sports or the Great Bear Heli Skiing – or opt for a more relaxed snowy adventure at Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, which has both groomed and ungroomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

Spring & summer activities

In the spring and summertime, Great Bear Sailing Adventures offers unique and eco-friendly sailing tours, providing visitors with an unparalleled experience entering the valley.

According to the community’s website, the tours are led by experienced guides who are knowledgeable about the local ecology.

Pro climbers and beginners alike can enjoy tackling the area’s range of granite and limestone rock formations, which include “multi-pitch routes and boulder problems.”

As for the Great Bear Rainforest, the vast 64,000-square-km region contains stretches of ancient forests and diverse ecosystems, including thousand-year-old cedar trees, grizzly bears, rare white-coloured ‘Spirit Bears,’ and abundant marine life.

Visitors can stay at the Spirit Bear Lodge (on the ancestral Kitasoo/Xai’xais lands) and take part in numerous Indigenous-led wilderness tours, including the BC Grizzly Bear Homalco Tours.

Looking for a great rainy day adventure? Tourism Bella Coola recommends exploring the West Nusatsum Forest Service Road and venturing to Odegaard Falls!

So there you have it, adventurers. No matter your season of choice, Bella Coola is the stuff of bucket lists!
