Gear up, Alberta, because cycling season is here and Banff has announced a major road closure to accommodate two-wheelers in celebration of incoming weather.
After proving to be an incredibly successful experience last year – everyone’s favorite mountain town will restrict vehicles from entering a portion of the parkway in favor of the many bikers that occupy the eastern part of the area.
This 17-kilometer stretch will remain closed between May 1st and June 25th – then again between September 1st and the 30th – so plan ahead and prepare to take alternate routes from point A to point B.
In fact, it might be worth familiarizing yourself with these scenic diversions as well, because this particular pilot will reoccur every spring for years to come – as confirmed on the Parks Canada website.
“This year, Parks Canada will launch a three-year cycling pilot program along the Bow Valley Parkway’s eastern section,” they wrote.
“This decision is informed by feedback from recent public engagement on cycling and considers operational requirements, and park management priorities. ”
Want to take advantage of the program? You’re going to need a starting point!
“Cyclists traveling on the parkway are encouraged to start and end their journey in the Town of Banff by parking at the Train Station Public Parking Lot,” they wrote, before also asking that cyclists limit their travel to the hours of 8 am and 8 pm.
For more information, or background on the project, you can visit their website below, otherwise, lace those shoes and enjoy, Alberta!
