Aged to perfection: This charming venue is the oldest of its kind in all of Alberta

It’s not polite to talk about someone’s age, but when it comes to historic buildings and legendary landmarks like the Bailey Theatre in Alberta, we can make an exception.

Located in the beautiful city of Camrose, the Bailey Theatre is actually the oldest live performing arts theatre in the entire province and it’s likely seen some incredible things.

While it’s mainly used for concerts and the occasional play, this theatre has shown everything from silent movies to vaudeville shows and has even hosted boxing and wrestling matches, and ceremonies.

Established by Camille David and built between 1910 and 1911, this beautiful building is instantly recognizable for its Art Deco tower and light-up canopy – though it didn’t always look like that.

According to The Canadian Register of Historic Places, the building had its first major facelift after it was sold to Stan Bailey in 1913, who changed nearly everything but the metal-panelled auditorium walls, wood trusses, and the writings on the walls in the dressing rooms under the stage.

Later, in the 1930s, the iconic exterior marquee tower, stucco, speed lines, black Carrera glass and 120-seat curved balcony with stepped rows were also added.
