A strong solar storm could mean stargazers across Canada will see the Northern Lights this week

From British Columbia to Quebec, it’s almost showtime!

This evening, Tuesday, July 30th and then again on the 31st and August 1st, 2024, night owls should point their peepers to the night sky for a dazzling display of green, purple, and pink.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), an Aurora Borealis (or Northern Lights) could be visible in cities across Canada, as long as the sky is clear and you know when to step outside.

“A number of CMEs have been associated with the increased activity and at least four of these have anticipated Earth-directed components with possible arrivals beginning Tuesday on to Thursday and geomagnetic storm watches were issued accordingly: G3 for Jul 30 and G2 for July 31 and 1 Aug.” they wrote.

“Should the forecast conditions occur during the late evening hours, the aurora could become visible as far south as the northeast U.S. through the upper midwest and across the northern states to include Oregon.”

This means that anyone in major cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal could be in for a treat.

If you’d like to enjoy them, we’d recommend heading out of the city and away from light pollution, then letting your eyes really adjust.

Who knows, you could be among the lucky ones!

Good luck, bring snacks, remember to tag us in your Aurora Borealis photos in your photos and enjoy!

There’s nothing quite like it!
