It’s been quite an Olympic Games thus far, hasn’t it? Following the likes of Penny Oleksiak and the Canadian women in general, Canada’s Andre De Grasse shattered the Canadian 200m sprint record this morning, capturing gold with a blistering time of 19.62 seconds. It’s the first time a Canadian has won gold in this event since Percy Williams did in 1928.
After sprinting his way to a bronze medal in the 100m earlier this week, De Grasse was fine-tuned for his first Olympic gold after winning his semi-final heat quite comfortably. The setting was prime for him to capture first place this morning, and boy, oh boy, did he ever deliver.
After a solid start out of the blocks, De Grasse turned up the heat after the corner to narrowly beat out Americans Kenny Bednarek with a time of 19.68 and Noah Lyles with a time of 19.74 for bronze.
