BC’s newest provincial park is home to thousand-year-old trees & a cascading waterfall

Tree and forest lovers have plenty of options when it comes to exploring old-growth forests in BC – but the province’s newest park might be home to some of the oldest trees around, funnily enough. Located between Prince George and McBride, Ancient Forest/Chun T’oh Whudujut Provincial Park offers visitors the chance to hike the Ancient Forest trail, bringing you past towering thousand-year-old western redcedars, in addition to a biodiverse range of plants, mosses lichens, and fungi.

Park visitors can choose between the 450-metre-long universally accessible boardwalk and the 2.3 km boardwalk leading to the magnificent “Big” Tree, Tree Beard, and Radies Tree. Oh, and a beautiful cascading waterfall to top off the magical experience!

Note that there is no overnight camping permitted at the Ancient Forest or Driscoll Ridge parking lots, however, campers can set up at Purden Lake Provincial Park, located 50 km west.

In addition to the current campfire ban, the area is at risk for increased wildfire activity – so the best move might be to bookmark this trip for mid-August or early September.
