A charming riverside Ontario town is one of the oldest in the province

In need of a little escape from the hustle and bustle of the city? Ontario is full of charming towns and villages, some with a history that dates back as far as the 1800s. Amherstburg is one of those spots.

Whether you visit during the summer to take in the waterfront views and lovely gardens, in the fall when the colours are changing, or in the spring and winter when the streets are quieter, and everything is covered in a sparkly layer of snow, this town needs to be added to your list of places to visit.

History

According to its website, Amherstburg is one of Ontario’s oldest towns. It is considered a “War of 1812” community, with a history written through various buildings, monuments, and parks.

Some of the key landmarks in the area include:

  • Gordon House
  • King’s Navy Yard Park
  • Provincial Marine Monument
  • International Peace Sculpture
  • Amherstburg Freedom Museum
  • General Amherst Murals
  • Wigle Park

Other explorations

One of the area’s most popular attractions is Vivance Winery. This winery brings in people from near and far in Ontario.

According to Vivance, the winery is “at the western gateway to Southwestern Ontario’s premier wine country.”

If you can go on a nice day, the patio in the vineyard has gorgeous views, but if you’re heading there on a day with chilly weather, check out the tasting room. There, you’ll find a variety of different wines and wine flights — yes, please!

Finally, end your day in Amherstburg, taking in the views at the waterfront. Some pathways run along the water, passing by gardens and sculptures, making for a great way to wrap up your time there. There’s an appropriately named ice cream spot (Waterfront Ice Cream) where you can grab a scoop to enjoy while taking in the views. Perfection.

If it’s too cold for ice cream, head to one of my favourite spots: The Salty Dog. Grab the perch and chips or one of their pizzas and a cold pint. Thank me later.

Amherstburg awaits!
