Alberta just opened it’s very first fully accessible outdoor rink here in Calgary!

Well, folks, it’s been a long time coming, but a fully accessible rink is finally open in Calgary! This outdoor facility is the first of its kind in Alberta and will ensure that everyone can play and skate safely and without any difficulty or assistance.

“Outdoor hockey is for everyone – a place to gather friends and family of all ages and abilities to create lasting memories,” said John Butterwick, Rink director of the Parkdale Community Association in a press release.

To ensure that everyone is able to play and skate, the new rink was built without a lip, so those on walkers or sleds are able to get on the ice easily. It also has wider bench doors and even clear boards, making it easier for anyone in a wheelchair to catch all the craziness. Cool, hey?

Thanks to $1.25 million in funding from the city, province, parks foundation, and Calgary Flames Foundation; other features include large washrooms and change rooms for those who need the space, making it a heck of a lot more comfortable for all!

Construction for this brand new facility actually started back in September, almost immediately after they chose to tear their old rink down and start from scratch, and is now open to the public so check it out!

It’s super cool to see Calgary take a huge step in making the city a better place to live for everyone, and we hope to see more of this in the future! Great job, Parkdale!
