Lots of Alberta drivers will have their GDL automatically removed for FREE soon & here’s what to know

License holders, get ready because good news could soon be in your post box! The provincial government is gearing up to roll out new technology that will automatically remove the GDL status of thousands of drivers across Alberta (for FREE) – but there are a few things to be aware of before it goes live.

As many of you may already know, advanced road tests are no longer necessary to get a full Class 5 or Class 6 driver’s permit in Alberta under their updated licensing system – however, until now, the change had to be made manually.

Luckily, on June 25th, 2023, new technology will be implemented to automatically review a GDL driver file to determine if a person is eligible to exit the GDL program.

So how do you know if you’re on their list?

Well, according to the government, as long as you’re 18 years of age or older, have completed 24 months of probationary driving (or an official Class 5/6 training program), and have been suspension and demerit-free for the last 12 months a letter will be mailed to you in July.

Can’t wait? Eligible drivers with an urgent need to exit the program for a job are still encouraged to visit their local registry office and speak to an agent. Until this is done (or until they get a letter of confirmation) the GDL will remain in place.

If of course, they do not meet the requirements, they will remain in the GDL program and will be subject to licensing restrictions until they meet the criteria, but there you have it!

Many Alberta drivers will soon be GDL-less and will save $150 in the process, and isn’t that exciting? Good luck and enjoy your new-found freedom.
