Watch hawks and owls soar at Canada’s largest birds of prey facility in Alberta

This facility in Alberta rescues all types of birds of prey, and during the summer, you can check them out yourself.

The Alberta Birds of Prey Centre is Canada’s largest birds of prey facility. It’s situated on a 70-acre wetland site with the centre featuring various hawks, falcons, eagles and owls of Alberta. You can visit this facility in Coaldale, in southern Alberta, just south of Calgary.

What to expect

First and foremost, the primary focus of this facility and organization is the rescue and release of injured birds. More specifically, it’s focused on supporting hawks, falcons, eagles, owls, and vultures. The goal is to work cooperatively with Alberta Fish and Wildlife to give birds a second chance at life in the wild.

Although the centre is not open at the moment, you can expect it to open during the May long weekend this year. I personally cannot wait to see all the beautiful birds flying.

During the spring and summer, there are a variety of things to see and do at this facility. My favourite activity is interacting one-on-one with owls, allowing them to perch on your arm or touch their feathers. During the summer, I’d suggest keeping an eye on its socials for when you can see the cute baby owls— they’re just so adorable!

There are also flying demonstrations, where you can watch certain birds spread their wings. If you wanna take a break from the sun in the summer, you can also chill and waddle with the ducks in the shade.

If you consider yourself a bird-lover, or just are curious about the winged creatures roaming around our province, this is a great stop to make this spring. Let yourself soar on over to the birds of prey centre, you won’t regret it.
