A new complex is being built on the East Village riverfront & it’ll look different than anything in the area

Big news, architectural enthusiasts! The iconic Simmons building on the riverfront is getting a new neighbour. As announced by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, a brand new mixed-use complex will be built at the intersection of Riverfront Avenue and Confluence Way, further improving the beloved East Village area.

A project years in the making, this particular spot (which is currently a parking lot) has been the apple of CMLC’s eye. Now with a little help from Winnipeg-based company Alston Properties, their dreams of a fully realized EV are becoming a reality.

“In the 14 years since CMLC began our revitalization work in East Village, we’ve had our eye on this small but strategic piece of land as one whose development will signify a key step in realizing our master-plan vision for the district,” said CMLC president and CEO Kate Thompson in a press release.

Fronting the extremely popular River Walk, this new building will have 44 residential units and 9,3000 sq ft of street-level retail space when completed and look completely different than nearby destinations.

Built with steel, concrete, wood, and glass, this white and grey brick building will be a stand-out addition to the neighbourhood, giving people one more hot spot to wine, dine and live comfortably in Calgary.

Can’t wait to check it out? Well, according to a statement made by the CMLC, the project is expected to break ground next summer and will be ready to welcome tenants in 2024. However, anything can happen – so don’t start packing boxes to move in just yet.

As always, as more information rolls in, we’ll keep you updated so keep an eye out – and take in the East Village as it is while you can, folks, because big things are coming!
