The first glimpse of Vancouver’s future Jericho Lands shows incredible potential (IMAGES)

Following years of waiting, the City of Vancouver unveiled the first glimpse at what the Jericho Lands may look like in the future. And oh boy, do they have a massive transformation in mind, rivalling even the Senakw development near the Burrard Street Bridge. Let’s check it out!

The Jericho Lands development is a joint venture between the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh (MST) Partnership, and the Canada Lands Company (CLC). The plan? Create a roughly 10,000,000 sq. ft. development using the 90 acres of land, featuring a mix of towers, community centres, and public spaces. If it goes through, the development will double the population of West Point Grey, adding homes for 13,000 to 18,000 people.

We don’t even want to guess how much it will cost to build, but the CBC has reported that the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh (MST) Partnership paid around $480M for half of the land, while the CLC (a Crown corporation) paid some $237M for the other half. So yeah, whatever happens, this is a massive investment.

There are actually two different concepts that have been proposed- “aq ̓ əs / sp’akw’us / Eagle” and “Łən / tahim tl’a uxwmixw-chet / Weave”. The Eagle design utilizes an elongated diagonal pathway running through the development, with 4 quadrants for community spaces and buildings.

Meanwhile, the Weave design opts for a more standard layout, using interwoven networks and a central east-west ‘spine’ down the middle. Both concepts will have similar housing capacities and feature 3 high-rise towers, so it’s mostly about aesthetics and public space.

Personally, we’re more about the Eagle concept, but that’s just our opinion! In fact, the city wants everyone to share their thoughts on the development, now that the initial plan has been revealed. If all goes well, then construction could start as early as 2025, barring hangups with zoning laws or city council decisions.
