A brand new rooftop rec centre and park has opened in downtown Toronto

One of the coolest parks we’ve seen in a long while has finally opened up in the city. The Canoe Landing Community Recreation Centre and Park is a vertical community oasis nestled in downtown Toronto. The collaboration between the City of Toronto, two publicly funded school boards, and ZAS Architects Inc. has left the city with one of the most unique amenities we’ve seen in a while.

The Canoe Landing Community Recreation Centre and Park is located on Fort York Blvd, just one block west of Spadina Ave.

Taking up a whopping 158,893 square feet on a 3.32 acre site, this $65 million project includes a recreation centre, public and Catholic elementary school, and a childcare centre. All within one innovative campus.

The Canoe Landing Recreation Centre and Park has sustainability at its core. Which is why the spot uses photovoltaic panels to generate 10% renewable energy, and they’ve maximized free roof opportunities for the space.

But the most exciting part has to be all the amazing perks the park is loaded with. The “active” green roof includes space for outdoor sports, a track for running or walking, and even patios equipped with wifi. There’s indoor amenities as well, including the basketball court pictured above, which are set to open to the public as soon as COVID-19 safety measure allow it.

For now, you can check out the rooftop park any day of the week. The spot is open Monday – Friday at 4PM – 9PM, Saturdays at 9AM – 8PM, and Sundays 9AM – 6PM.
