So you’ve already burned through the classics, and have found yourself in a sea of Netflix originals you’ve never heard of. Don’t fret, because we’re about to throw you a lifeline! This fall, why not pop some corn and binge a few Alberta-made horror movies and shows? Good or bad, at least you can have some fun pointing out recognizable fields, mountain backdrops, and neighbourhoods. Let’s jump into it!

Set in the “Z Nation” universe, Netflix’s Black Summer stars Jamie King (Pearl Harbour, Sin City) as a mother who is separated from her daughter, Anna, in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. Alongside other survivors, she embarks on a harrowing journey to find her. This show is almost exclusively filmed in Calgary and even features a ton of local performers – which is pretty cool.
Filmed entirely in Calgary and Drumheller, The Hitcher II features performances by Jake Busey (Starship Troopers) and Kari Wuhrer (Eight Legged Freaks).
Similar to the original (with Game of Thrones Sean Bean) this film follows a young couple who mistakenly picks up a crazed hitchhiker in the desert. Sure they can run, bud can the criminal run faster?
Filmed entirely in Calgary, Red Letter Day is a Canadian horror film about an upper-class neighbourhood that goes totally mad after a mysterious letter arrives on everyone’s doorstep. While the ‘kill or be killed’ concept is all too familiar, it’s pretty fun to see Calgary in the background, so check it out!
Prom Night is considered to be an 80s classic, but Prom Night II hits different. Partially filmed in Edmonton, this movie certainly didn’t win an Oscar, but it’ll still entertain, especially if you’re a fan of revenge plotlines and ghosts or just really hated high school.
Starring Amber Midthunder (Legion and The Ice Road), this year’s Predator prequel was filmed in and around Calgary and was praised by both critics and fans. If you haven’t seen it already – watch it. It really is fantastic and features so many talented Albertans.
A Canadian cult classic, Giner Snaps II: Unleashed follows Brigitte who is bitten by a werewolf and has to grapple with change and instinct. Filming locations include Edmonton so it’s worth watching even for the familiarity!
Ah, a guilty pleasure. Filmed in Cochrane and Calgary, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is, what we can only describe as, a backwoods chainsaw massacre. With an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say that we’re not the only ones who had a ton of fun watching this movie.
Wynonna Earp is another Netflix original filmed entirely in Alberta. Best described as a western, drama, horror, action, fantasy series, Wynonna Earp follows a 27-year-old badass who battles demons, creatures, and criminals in a small town called ‘Purgatory.’ While it does defy a single genre, we definitely believe that it belongs on this list. Fear is in the eye of the beholder, after all.
Filmed entirely in YYC, Still/Born stars Christie Burke as Mary, a mother who loses one of her twins at birth. After returning home, strange things begin to happen to her and her surviving baby, but of course, everyone assumes she’s insane.
Filmed in Toronto, L.A., and most importantly Calgary, Children of the Corn: Revelations is loosely based on Stephen King’s iconic short story of the same name. Is it as good as the OG 1984 film? Not in our opinion, but it’s still pretty cool to watch Alberta in all its freaky glory.
Though we wouldn’t necessarily consider this show all that scary, the set has been recreated for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando and we couldn’t resist adding it! Filmed entirely in Alberta, The Last Of Us is dramatic, moving and beautifully acted – winning over audiences all over the world. Though season 2 will be filmed in Vancouver, we will never stop talking about this one… ever. We love it too much!
