Difficult is an understatement for what hospitals have endured in the last few years. From pressure on staffing, and financial stress, a new ranking is out, honouring the world’s best hospitals. And several Canadian hospitals made the cut.
Newsweek has issued its latest world’s best hospitals for 2023, and they’re focusing on first-class care, first-class research, and first-class innovation.
“This year we have added an important new pillar to our scoring model: for the first time, hospitals were surveyed regarding their PROMs implementation status,” states the ranking.
“PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.”
They’ve ranked over 2,300 in 28 countries, but narrowed it down to the top 250. In the top five, a hospital in Toronto managed to score above all other Canadian healthcare hubs.

According to the official ranking, Toronto General – UHN came in fifth place. They are the only Canadian mentioned in the top five, 10, and even 20.
Four U.S hospitals scored higher positions while a hospital in Sweden ranks just below Toronto.
The next Canadian hospital is Toronto’s Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in 22nd, followed by Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto in 26th.
