“There’s no place like home:” The classic tale of Oz is coming to Calgary, but this time as a ballet

Get your sparkly red heels ready, because there’s a magical adventure coming to Calgary this month. Dorothy and her troop of friends will be in town, but this time they’re wearing ballet shoes!

You can catch the Canadian premiere of The Wizard of Oz presented by The Alberta Ballet in Calgary this month at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. It’s everything you know and love about the classic story but in a whole new light.

Join Dorothy and her ragtag crew as they follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City in Oz. Each one has a wish; Dorothy longs to go home, Scarecrow hopes to ask for a brain, the Tin Man dreams of a heart, and the Lion desires to finally find his courage. With stunning visuals and heartfelt storytelling, Dorothy will discover the profound strength in friendship and found family.

This rendition by Francesco Ventriglia brings the story to life with a fusion of classical and contemporary ballet. After travelling the globe with shows in Italy, New Zealand, and Uruguay, it’s finally here for its Canadian premiere.

The Wizard of Oz, performed by the Alberta Ballet, will be in Calgary for three days in March before continuing on to Edmonton. So don’t wait if you want to see the show!

It’s a great idea for a special date night or to test the waters of the local arts and culture scene. Think of it this way, you already know the story. Now you can sound sophisticated to your friends when you tell them you’re the type of person who goes to the ballet.

The Wizard of Oz, The Alberta Ballet

When: Thursday, March 13 – Saturday, March 15, 2025
Where: Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, 1415 14 Ave NW, Calgary
Cost: $95+
