A spring storm could blow through the Prairies this week & here’s what to expect in Alberta

It’s springtime and you know what that means! It’s time to dust off the patio furniture and get ready for some sunshine, right? Well, not quite. According to the Weather Network, parts of Alberta and the rest of the prairies could see some ‘significant’ snow this week.

Some cities, including Edmonton, will likely make it to Friday without any precipitation – but that’s a different story for Calgary and those living within close proximity to the Rocky Mountains.

“A large upper-level low spinning off over the Pacific will eject energy inland, developing a low-pressure system into Tuesday,” the publication wrote.

“The low will track north and push widespread across southern Saskatchewan, Manitoba and parts of Alberta Wednesday and into Thursday.”

During this time Calgary could see anywhere between 1 to 3 centimetres, while Banff and Canmore are in for upwards of 5,  but there’s still plenty to be grateful for!

While a little bit of snow undoubtedly sucks, we’re certainly not going to get hit as hard as our neighbouring provinces which could see up to 20 millimetres by Friday eve.

“Total accumulations of all types of precipitation may exceed 20 mm for some areas, greatly exacerbating the flood situation for some regions,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada.

“The highest confidence for the heaviest precipitation lies over eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba, roughly from Regina to the Manitoba Parklands.”

Still, consider taking your outdoor cushions inside until next week if you’re in the western part of the province. It’s not over quite yet, but it won’t be long! The Alberta weather forecast has been looking up and there is sun in your immediate future so here’s to brighter days ahead.  You’ve got this!
